PETER ARMBRUSTER

The European Physical Society's new Lise Meitner Prize for Nuclear Science goes to Peter Armbruster (GSI, Darmstadt; pictured), Gottfried Muenzenberg (GSI, Darmstadt) and Yuri Ts Oganessian (Flerov Laboratory of Nuclear Reactions, Dubna) for their synthesis of new heavy elements.

Peter Armbruster is a physicist at the Gesellschaft für Schwerionenforschung (GSI) facility in Darmstadt, Germany, and is credited with discovering elements 108 Hassium, 109 Meitnerium, 110 (darmstadtium), 111 (roentgenium), and 112 (ununbium). He studied physics at the Technical University of Stuttgart and Munich, and obtained his Ph.D. in 1961 under Heinz Maier-Leibnitz, Technical University of Munich.
